INTRODUCTION
The Dearborn Youth Symphony (DYS) was formed in 1975 to provide young performers with symphonic ensemble experience and to foster interest in instrumental music. Since that time, the DYS has been an integral step to greater musical achievement for many young musicians in the area. Today, with the sponsorship of the Dearborn Recreation Department of the City of Dearborn, strong parental volunteer efforts, and talented and dedicated conductors, the DYS continues to nurture and challenge young musicians.
Membership includes elementary through high school age students from over 25 communities in the southeast Michigan metro area. The DYS has three orchestras and a flute choir: the Symphony Orchestra made up of advanced musicians from the middle school through the high school; the Concert Orchestra, made up of musicians with limited formal musical training from elementary through middle school; the String Orchestra, made up of musicians with introductory or basic musical training from the elementary through the middle school. The DYS Flute Choir, conducted by Mrs. Donna Olkowski provides an opportunity for Flute musicians to participate in a unique musical experience. The Flute Choir is made up of musicians with intermediate and advanced musical training from elementary through high school.
The DYS rehearses and plays at its home: the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. This new, state-of-the-art performance theatre truly enhances the experience of the DYS musicians. With a worldclass performance venue and newly expanded 120+ musician membership, the Dearborn Youth Symphony is poised for even greater success in the future!
